Our Approach to Children's Therapy

We understand that every child is unique, which is why our therapy sessions are tailored to meet their individual needs. With a team of specialist children’s therapists, we mainly use Play Therapy in our sessions, but also combine EMDR therapy where children require support with trauma.

Play Therapy

Play Therapy is a child-centred therapeutic approach where play and creative expression are used as the main tools for communication and healing. Since children often struggle to express emotions verbally, Play Therapy allows them to explore their thoughts and feelings in a natural, safe, and engaging way. Play therapists are trained to use a variety of equipment:

  • Drawing and Painting

    Helps externalise emotions and thoughts.

  • Sand Trays

Allows children to create and process experiences symbolically.

  • Drama and Puppetry

Encourages role-playing and safe emotional expression.

  • Music and Movement

Helps with emotional regulation and self-expression.

  • Water Play

Engages sensory processing and creative problem-solving.

EMDR-Informed Techniques

EMDR informed techniques help children process and heal from trauma. This approach is particularly helpful for children who struggle to express their emotions verbally, since bilateral stimulation helps the brain regulate difficult memories, making them feel less overwhelming:

  • Eye Movements

Following a moving object (such as a light or therapist’s hand) from side to side.

  • Tactile Tapping

Gentle tapping on the child’s hands, knees, or shoulders.

  • Butterfly Hugs

The child crosses their arms over their chest and gently taps their shoulders.

Where Children's Therapy Takes Place

The Shoreham Centre

Children’s Therapy sessions take place in a private room at the fully accessible Shoreham Centre. Conveniently located near public transport, it offers a large pay-and-display car park at the rear, as well as an on-site coffee shop for parents.

School

For parents who prefer not to take their child out of school for therapy, some of our therapists can provide sessions within the child's school. This allows children to receive the support they need in a familiar environment, minimising disruption to their learning.

Our Children's Therapy Package

We offer a package that includes an initial consultation (sometimes with parent present), and 8 sessions with a review around session 6 to discuss if further sessions would be beneficial.

Sessions are usually between 45-50 minutes.

We are flexible and will discuss what session pattern would suit you best, but children usually have recurring weekly sessions.

The prices below are for children's therapy with a qualified therapist, we do also offer low-cost children's wellbeing support sessions.
