Career Coaching

If you're stuck in your career...

I will coach you to get intentional about your career choices, show you how to advance your career to experience success and fulfilment at your workplace.

So what is career coaching?

Career coaching can be anything from shifting boundaries and managing work life balance better to a change of career and direction. Whatever you are striving to achieve if you need support you are in the right place!

How do we do this? Well we all have a set of values, rules that we like to follow. Sometimes we find ourselves in a job/career which is completely in opposition to these personal values. By delving into your core identity we can help to uncover what is mis-alligned and look at living to your purpose and passion! This might mean a career change, or it might mean that we are working out what needs to change in order to gain the respect and confidence to implement boundaries that will make you feel in alignment and enjoying work again!

I have been close to burn out, I know and understand how stuck you feel and how you feel you have no control or choice in your work, but here's the thing: You absolutely have a choice! Sometimes you just need to talk it through.

Adult Therapy

Are you struggling to function day to day....

Welcome! I am so glad you have started to look into how to help yourself. I help you through a wide range of challenges, including: depression, anxiety, panic, grief, addiction, bullying, phobia or trauma, using evidence-based therapy treatments such as CBT, SFBT, BA, REBT and DBT to teach you coping strategies that enhance your well being. Don't worry if you don't understand all the approaches, they are all different evident based approaches, some have overlap within them and I will discuss relevant approaches and reasons behind it so that you are aware of what to expect. Most people have heard of CBT, well BA, REBT and DBT are all similar approaches to CBT. Solution Focused approaches are a bit different and do what they say on the tin really, focusing on finding the solution yourself with me using guided questioning to help you get there.

Working with identifying the problem. Are you experiencing the following:

Woman in cozy sweater holding a cup of tea
  • Feeling overwhelmed, unable to regulate emotions such as anxiety, depression and anger
  • Unable to concentrate or focus
  • Unable to manage time/ boundaries
  • Unable to communicate with others how you are feeling
  • Understand what is behind the feelings to help move forward
  • Gain Clarity, focus and energy to be able to strive towards goals
  • Implement healthy habits to create healthy boundaries, structure and manage time
  • Communicating effectively

How do we do this:

Sometimes we know exactly what we want to achieve and sometimes we don't. Sometimes we are so focused on what the problem is that we have no idea where we actually want to go. I find so many people focus on the problem but its much harder to quantify where we want to go. Mental well-being is much harder than physical! By helping you set SMART goals and keeping you accountable we can focus on what's important and work out how to get there. This allows you to achieve your full potential.

Trauma Therapy

What is Trauma?

'Trauma is a response to a distressing event that impacts on the way in which we can cope and causes a lot of heightened emotions'.

What happens when we suffer significant life events?

If we think of our brain as a large computer. Most of the time our mind and body manage information automatically processing new information and experiences without conscious awareness. However, when something significant occurs and you are traumatised by an overwhelming event (e.g an accident) or by being repeatedly subjected to distress (e.g. childhood abuse) your natural coping mechanism can become overloaded. This overloading means that it is stored in the wrong part of your brain (Limbic system- linked with 'fight flight freeze' emotional responses) and means some experiences remain 'unprocessed'. This are often stored in 'raw' emotional form and not 'story' verbal mode. Memories can be continually triggered when you experience events similar to the difficult experiences you have been through.

Trauma's can be what we class as 'BIG T Trauma' such as abuse, an accident, grief, direct experience of COVID 19; or 'LITTLE T Trauma' such as bullying at school or in the workplace, and a significant arguement with a loved one.

Trauma based approaches helps create the connections between your brain's neural pathways meaning that the memory can be processed and no longer in the fight/flight/freeze part of the brain.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)

EMDR is one of the main approaches I use when considering working with Trauma. EMDR is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from symptoms and emotional distress that are a result of disturbing life events/ trauma. It works by the client tracking the therapists hand with their eyes, or what we call butterfly hugs where we tap each shoulder with our arms crossed over our chest, which dual processes information within the brain. I offer this to both adults and children. It replicates the movements from REM sleep which is the body's natural way of processing information.

I also utilise other approaches that I have discussed in previous sections such as NLP.

The sessions of trauma support can vary in length. This is because some sessions need to be longer to ensure we process the event. This will be discussed at the time. The preparation sessions consist of assessment and what we call resourcing. This involves creating positive anchors utilising visualisations (imagining specific targets) which we are then able to utilise when coming out of experiences.

You need to feel comfortable in thinking about the events that happened to enable processing but do not need to share all the information with me. I will be here to support you every step of the way. I cannot take away what has happened but I can help you to process the event into your processed memory and take the emotion out of it to allow you to move forward with your life.

Children and Family Therapy

Working with Young Children:

I utilise many different approaches working with children depending on the age and stage of the child.

Play Therapy is one of the main ways I use with primary age Children. It is a method of helping children with behaviour and emotional problems to help themselves. Play is the child's natural way of expressing themselves and is essential for emotional and social development. Play therapy is an opportunity for the child to 'play out' their thoughts, feelings and problems. Through specialist techniques the child will gain insight into their personal problems. I utilise the non-directive approach, which is person-centred and allows the child to choose the method they feel is most appropriate to them personally.

Play therapy has many 'toolkit' elements to it. This includes Art, Sand, Puppets, Music and Lego.

I love creative art techniques within the play room. Allowing the child to 'make mess' and draw out their feelings can be so powerful.

Sand is another amazing approach. Utilising minature figures within a sandtray your child will be able to explore their world and go to a deep unconscious level in helping them to find out their solutions.

I am Lego Therapy trained so if your child loves Lego we could purely focus each session on lego. The Lego Therapy has a specific set to work from each week and is amazing to help children work out their problems.

Play therapy has emerged as a mainstream mental health profession alongside counselling and psychotherapy with its own professional organisation Play Therapy UK - The United Kingdom Society for Play and Creative Arts Therapies. You can get more detailed information from PTUK's site. www.playtherapy.org.uk

Working with Adolescents:

I utilise many different approaches working with young people depending on the age and stage of the child.

With secondary age children, I utilise different approaches depending on the child. As well as the techniques described above I also consider using CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy), NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), Solution Focused and Goal setting person centred approaches. Your child brings to session what they wish to explore and I can help them to unpick and find their own solutions.

If they have been through significant life events they may need some EMDR therapy (see section on trauma).

Working with Parents:

Sometimes when working with the child it becomes evident that the parent needs some support too. I create a bespoke package of support where I offer parents some sessions too. This could be to discuss particular parenting techniques, offer advice and guidance around how to support the child, be a space to offload about the difficulties at home, or often dips into my working with adult section (see other section). Quite often children and young people pick up on our behaviours so if we are anxious, they will display the same emotion, if we are feeling positive, calm and focused they do too.

This could also include working with two parents who have different approaches to parenting to help them find a middle ground.

Sometimes there is an issue with the attachment bond between parent and child: maybe child was born premature or has been in and out of hospital or away from parents care for periods of time. These sessions would involve both parent and child working together to work through issues and work towards achievable goals. It could be either through talking or creative approaches.

Sometimes its a whole family session required with grandparents, aunties, uncles you name it! I literally work with what is needed to make changes in the best way for the child.

Testimonials

Claire has offered our whole family support during a difficult time. She offers clear insight and practical advice on how to manage relationships. Her holistic approach to well-being, backed up with her experience and knowledge is excellent.

Kate

My daughter has found it really useful to have some more things in her mental 'tool box' to help manage her feelings, especially around anxieties about school. She is noticeably calmer and more confident that she can do things and can cope. She seems to understand her emotions a bit better now and is more willing to try things she had lost the confidence to do.

Rachel

Bonnie: Claire is really nice. Go to her if you need help.

Parents: I think you made a huge difference to Bonnie and I was so glad she was able to trust you.

Bonnie

Woody has made massive changes in his behaviour and attitude to life and learning. Since his sessions with Claire he is able to express himself more easily and his attention has drastically improved, he is now keen to listen and learn. He was able to process the past few months of unsettlement and seems much happier and at ease. Thank you so much for all your help.
